New bagged policy

Starting June 1, 2013 the VIA Rail has implemented a new checked baggage policy. VIA encourages everybody who boards the train to pack lite. A ticket entitles checked baggage free of charge. Here are some of the details you need to know:

Checked baggage entitlement (no charge)
 

 
2 checked articles (per person)
Maximum
23 kg (50 lb.) each
158 linear cm (62 linear inches) (length + width + height) each

*Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure at end terminals or 30 minutes at intermediate stations

Prohibited baggage 

The following articles are prohibited as checked baggage on VIA Rail trains:

• Cameras and photographic equipment
• Dangerous articles (ammunition, fireworks, flammable substances, radioactive materials, etc.)
• Perishable goods stored in polystyrene containers or any other containers that cannot be hermetically sealed
• Fragile articles
• Household goods
• Tow bars, trailer hitches, etc.
• Fishing rods without cases
• Liquids
• Construction material
• Office equipment
• Electronic equipment
• Valuable articles
• Plants
• Controlled or illegal substances
• Motorized vehicles such as snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, or personal watercraft
• Oxygen bottles

The VIA Rail Canada offers 19 train routes across Canada. Now it is time to explore the trains that will take you on your journey.

VIA 6-PAK

 What is VIA 6-PAK?

•  The minimum price of VIA 6-PAK is $ 84.00
• VIA 6-PAK is a packaged offered by VIA Rail for Youth ages 12-25
• 18 years or over for International Student
  
• It is 6 one-way  tickets or 3 round-trip tickets (Economy class)
• It allows you to travel on a budget in the Québec City – Windsor corridor and, now, on board the Ocean between Montréal, Moncton and Halifax.
• Upon purchase, you have to select two stations for your travel. 

 
Period of validity

• The VIA 6 pak is valid for 12 months from the first date of travel you requested or until expiry of the International Student Identity Card, whichever comes first.

How to use the VIA 6-PAK?

• You must book the ticket in advance, the number of seats are limited 
• To book the ticket go to one of the ticket counters or contact 1 888 VIA-RAIL (1 888 842-7245) do not forget to mention to the ticket agent that you are a 6-PAK holder
• You will need to show your VIA 6 pak and your International Student Identity Card when picking up or exchanging tickets, as well as on board our trains
• Valid only on economy class between the two stations you selected at the time of purchase (you can also travel to points located between those stations if you wish)
• VIA 6-PAK is non-transferable

The VIA Rail offers variety of affordable fare. One of them is the affordable youth fares. If you are between the ages of 12-25 years old and is travelling for fun or school, the VIA Rail is the affordable means of transportation for you!

VIA Rail offers low prices on their Escape fares. This offer is exclusively offered online and in the Quebec City - Windsor corridor.

The Escape Fares allows you to take advantage of:

• 1*Free Wi-Fi access
• 2*Downtown-to-downtown service

Reward Program

To show their appreciation, Via Rail Canada offers their loyal customers with their VIA Preference program.

 It is free to join!

Travel with VIA Rail and you can earn free travel.

You can earn:

• 1 *500 points welcome bonus (that is almost a one way fare to Montreal)

• 1 point for every dollar spent

How do you earn points?

Make sure to provide your VIA Preference number at the end of every transaction

Depending on your membership level, you can earn from 1,2,3 points for every dollar spent
Points are awarded depending on the fare you choose (see the chart below)

Extra points:

• Book online and get 25 bonus points
• Pick up your e-boarding pass at a self-service ticketing kiosk and get 25 bonus points

Points are only awarded to the ticket holder. Points are non-transferable.

How to redeem points?

VIA Preference points can be redeemed for travel on on board VIA trains travel in Canada and in France on SNCF trains

• Points are calculated by one way segments, per person
• For a return trip, multiply the needed points for a one way segment
• Travel rewards may only be claimed with points and not by combining cash and points
• You may claim points for a one-way segment and pay for the return trip
• VIA Préférence members aged  12-25 get a 20% reduction on redemptions in Economy class
• Reduction is applied at time of booking

1 * Spend $250 on travel with VIA in the first 6 months of registration
